AFFLICTION

As a senior in high school, I chose to do one of the most ambitious senior projects they had ever been pitched: I wanted to write and direct my own play. At the time, we had no theatre department, and I had very little theatre experience. But, I knew the story I wanted to tell, and I was determined to complete the project. This experience solidified my love for creating theatre, and led to majoring in it in college. A large part of what I do is owed to this opportunity my teachers allowed me to have.

The play is meant to depict the experience of having anxiety and depression. It personifies the mental illness into a physical character, so the audience can visualize what is happening in the mind of the character dealing with it. This play is by no means the greatest version of itself, and I am always wanting to revisit it to make it better. I have yet to get around to it, but I am excited to see that since then, a category of plays and musicals has been created with the goal of addressing the important topic of mental illness.

EPIC PROPORTIONS

Epic Proportions is a comedy that SCSA was going to have as a main stage production Spring 2020. However, due to Coronavirus, we were never able to. I was the assistant director on the production, and was working with these actors on one of the beginning scenes of the play. I had never done a comedy before, so it was fun and interesting to work and collaborate with these talented actors to create a scene we were all excited to present. I am so glad I was able to get it on video, so at least some of our production of Epic Proportions could be documented in some way.

NOW & THEN

As part of one of my directing classes, I chose to direct a scene from the 1995 movie Now & Then. It has always been one of my favorite movies, so I jumped at the opportunity to direct one of the most powerful scenes. This scene is where my love for directing and props came together so well. Picking out the props for the beginning of the scene was as fun as it was to direct them on how to interact with them. This is the proudest scene I directed in this class, so I was grateful that these actresses agreed to come back to film it.
